The Treaty of Westphalia 1644

Ever time there is a large scale war, the message start to sink in the brains of leaders whether they were kings, presidents, sultans, or Prime ministers that the only way to stop the horror and depravity of wars is to come together and form a treaty or an institution tasked with eradicating wars.

The first such attempt goes back to 1644 when the Peace of Westphalia, which was signed in the Westphalian cities of Osnabrück and Münster after several years of negotiations. This treaty followed the thirty years war that devastated Europe in the Seventeen Century. It was the first feat of diplomacy where human beings realised the futility of war and the sensibility of dialogue and diplomacy.

Of course the league of Nations was established soon after the First World war in 1919 and the United Nations after the Second world war. Both failed miserably in ending wars even though they were primarily founded to do just that.

My work One Peaceful World goes into detail into the reasons why all such efforts failed. One hope that after the the Third World war which is already afoot between the West and Russia that leaders will take their lessons from history.
